On the eve of the Third Battle of Ypres, the British occupy some small buildings along this street: ‘Tower Hamlets’. They overlook the valley of the Basseville stream in which Herenthage Park is located. In the woods of that park is the German Albrechttelling. In front of the position runs the stream, which the shelling has turned into an impenetrable swamp. It is an effective obstacle.
Breaking through the defence line
Breaking through that position is therefore something British troops grit their teeth at. It was not until 20 September, more than a month and a half after the start of the offensive, that it was breached. Just beyond Tower Hamlets, the front still runs aground in the Wilhelm position.
