The Germans start building positions from 1916. As a result, a lot of material has to reach the front zone. Ordinary roads, usually no more than narrow muddy streets, cannot cope with all that transport. They therefore proceed to build a complex network of railways.
Pioneer Park In The Star
Near this road junction, the ‘Pioneer Park In De Ster’ is constructed. It is a storage place for mainly building materials. There are several in the area but this is one of the largest. The material is mainly brought in by rail from Roeselare and Menen. From here, it travels along all kinds of roads and narrow gauge tracks towards the depots. Tons of material passed through here until mid-1917. The British offensive halts the completion of the front lines.
