Catherine Belettere is the daughter of Pieter Belettere, horse blacksmith from the enchanted smithy. Calle is described as a giant witch, a flying witch, a crazy witch and a ponderous piece of furniture. Moreover, Calle is the niece of Sefa Bubbles.
Pieter’s forge is located in today’s Wervikstraat. Calle gets her magic skills from a large parchment magic book and focuses mainly on the horses being shod in the forge. As she rubs the horse’s back, she recites formulas from the magic book. With these, she manages to cast an instant spell on the horses. Because of this enchantment, it is almost certain that the journeymen encounter problems with the horses during their journeys.
This causes Pieter to be out of work and his smithy gets the name of the enchanted smithy. The bailiff of the parish tries several times to get his hands on the book, but to no avail. When Calle feels her end approaching in 1747, she throws the book into the forge fire.
