Clette’s real name is Coleta Vandendycke. As a child, she was found along the Stratendijk near the Crampebusch. She later lives at the Gavermeerschen.
Clette is a ‘teilematooie’ or ridiculously dolled-up woman with a doll cast face. Her apron always contains a flask of magic potion, a decoction of ‘redshank’ and ‘selandine’. On her back, she carries a braided basket to hold herbs and crumbled bread for the rabbits she breeds. They are not just any rabbits, but rabbits with… three ears.
When pregnant women see Clette coming, they rush to put a grip of salt and an Easter nail (incense candle) at the door. This custom keeps evil away. Clette then comes to a complete standstill and cannot help but leave, with a few curses.
